ANDREW B MYERS
Have you ever given the ups to a Rubik's cube? No? Well, me neither. But I have a a feeling friendly Canadian photographer Andrew B. Myers has, or at least, I know he has photographed someone who has. I am crushing on Mr. Myers incredible, incredible, incredible body of work. I don’t think I’ve fangirled this hard since I watched The Lizzie McGuire movie (which I did yesterday, proudly). I wish there was a link between McGuire and Myers, but there really isn’t, unless Myers also leads a double life covering for a European pop star? You never know unless you ask! Either way, Myers is just as sensational as our little Lizzie, but enough about her. Myers work is quirky and cool; his photographs (or snapshots if you will) are composed and calculated, all providing a small scale narrative (usually) around objects and interaction that excite and humour and always leave me wanting more. Through browsing his work, one thing is clear: this man loves colour, and so do I.
“I’m not quite sure where I became so obsessed with washed out colours, sunlit shadows and negative space, but it must have something to do with how much I fetishized warm weather, the beach, and open areas during the summer in the remote area I come from, which I mostly remember as freezing and covered in several feet of snow”.
I am drawn to all of his images, even one that consists purely of yellow curtain blinds and red fingernails (i.e. “Hell Holes” - it’s magnificent). Just look at that colour, colour, colour! Whether it be blue world globes against a pink backdrop, a zesty lemon floating in aqua, or even a (red) Mario and (green) Luigi making out against a lavender screen (which yes, Myers has manufactured), I am mesmerised. Whether he’s shooting early 80’s or 90’s paraphernalia, or cats or dogs or ants, you won’t be disappointed in viewing.
